Introduce people in Italian

 “L’abito non fa il monaco”

Italian proverb

This means literally “the habit does not make the monk” which means the it is not possible to judge things by external appearances alone; similar to the English idiom you can’t judge a book by its cover.

But let’s be honest.

We always “judge” or get an idea when we get to know somebody new, no matter what.

If you are making new friends in Italy, you may want to be able to introduce your friends, family, colleagues to your new friends.

Let’s read the article so you will give a good impression of yourself and of your Italian!

Introductions in Italian

To introduce people in Italian you can use the expressions below.

Formal situation

Le presento Carlo Rossi.                                                          Let me introduce Carlo Rossi.

Le presento la signora Magnani.                                           Let me introduce Mrs Magnani.

Le presento il signor Bianchi.                                                 Let me introduce Mr Bianchi.

NOTE:

You use “Le presento + name of the person” but you use “Le presento + article (IL if you are introducing a male, LA if you are introducing a female) + Mr or Mrs or Miss … “

Informal situation

Questo é Carlo.                                                                           This is Carlo.

Questa é Maria.                                                                          This is Maria.

Lui è James. He is James.

Lei è Jane. She is Jane.

NOTE:

You use questo when introducing a male, and questa when introducing a female. You can just motion to each person as you say their name.

Depending on the formality of the situation, you can reply as follows.

Formal

Piacere di conoscerla.                                                                 Pleased to meet you.

Incantato or incantata.

(depending if you are a male or a female)

Informal

Ciao, piacere. Come stai?                                  Hello, nice to meet you. How are you?

Ciao, piacere. Come va?                                    Hello, nice to meet you. How are you doing?

Giving information about someone you are introducing

You can give many more information about the person you are introducing by saying how they are related to you, or how you know them.

Questo é Andrea, mio marito.                            This is Andrea, my husband.

Questa é Beatrice, mia moglie.                           This is Beatrice, my wife.

Questa é la mia amica Isabella.                           This is my friend Isabella.

Questo é Federico, un amico di scuola.             This is Federico, a school friend.

Questa é Laura, una vicina.                                  This is Laura, a neighbour.
